Both the restaurant and the website have specific menus for a variety of food allergies. For example; gluten free menu, peanut free menu, etc… Both the staff and the manager were attentive and educated about cross contamination in the kitchen. The manager has a relative with food allergies so she said she takes it very seriously which includes training all of the wait and kitchen staff about cross contamination and food allergies. Like all restaurants you have to be specific about your order but the waitress competently wrote down our specific order.

Our meals were delicious and made to our specifications which were to use a clean pan and only oil/salt/pepper for my son’s chicken with plain pasta. My gluten free meal was made correctly and taken from the gluten free menu.

Kavanagh’s Pizza Pub

Kevin, one of the owners, recently hosted my son’s camp group for a “make your own pizza” party. Since my son is allergic to tomato & garlic (plus a host of other ingredients) this could have been a bad situation. Instead, Kevin & his staff accommodated every request – a clean surface, clean bucket of cheese, clean pizza cutter – and my son had his very first, very delicious restaurant pizza. Note: we were there at a quiet time, not at the peak of lunch or dinner.

Kavanagh’s also stocks gluten-free dough, but my celiac friend tells me it has not been fresh and therefore not tasty. Maybe if it became more popular, it would be better. Anyway, it’s an option.

The chef is usually in the kitchen. The restaurant is small and has an open kitchen so asking the chef is easy! We were told summer selections do not have nuts but there will be nuts for the fall menu. They will review menu items and ingredients with you. The food is also GREAT!

The hostess stand has a binder. Be sure to ask Manager and Chef to confirm no presence of allergy with your order. In case binder is out of date. Binder provides good guidance.

The owner of the Blue Crab is helpful and knowledgeable. He warned us to beware of the Kids spaghetti and pizza sauce because they had pine nuts.

Although the salad bar is a nightmare for the allergic, they will bring you out “fresh” cups of whatever you want off the bar. They also now have separate menus for all the allergies. The only draw back (if it is one) is that a product will be listed as containing an allergen if it was simply made in the same facility. Some aren’t that strict while others are.

It took one cross-contamination episode with my son and the entire chain created a whole new policy for its restaurants nationwide. They now cite an unidentified boy as having caused them to re-think their approach to food (my boy). They are trained, have menus to look at, and otherwise have a great and fun experience for kids. There are talking animals all over the walls.
